Sharing music and smiles in September
This Tuesday, I gave my first Suite Melody Care performance of the 2015/2016 school year. In the weeks leading up to the performance, I printed out and practiced new repertoire to play for the residents. I decided to make the theme of my first performance "Movie Music," playing piano covers of songs that had been showcased in popular movies. I love being a part of Suite Melody Care because performing for the senior residents is such a rewarding experience. They're such a receptive audience, and always love the music, no matter what genre it is. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to prepare for just one performance, but I think it's definitely worth it.
I find that as I begin playing music, many of the residents cheer up and begin to smile. For example, this time, when I played the song "What A Wonderful World," a good number of people began singing along. I love being able to put my training in piano to a good use, share my love for music, and play for an audience who truly enjoys the music. Being a part of this program has taught me the value of being friendly and kind to others, and that even a small action (such as playing a song from someone's childhood) can go a long way.
